Beginners welcome! Lacquer experience plan

◆Plan details

You can choose your favorite spoon or bowl and experience painting it using the traditional fukiurushi lacquer technique .

Wiped lacquer is one of the most basic techniques in Japanese lacquering, in which lacquer is applied to carefully finished wood and then wiped off with a cloth or paper before it dries. It creates a beautiful, glossy finish that brings out the texture of the wood.

In this experience, you will apply the first coat of lacquer to the product. After that, our craftsmen will apply several coats of lacquer to the product in the workshop before delivering it to you.

◆Experience time

Approximately 30 minutes

When making a reservation, you must select the course title, course content, number of people participating, and finally the name of the person in charge (person in charge 1 to 4) before you can proceed to the next step.

Course A: Chopsticks and cutlery (1,100 yen) + experience fee (3,300 yen)
Course B: Bowl/Cup (2,750 yen) + Experience fee (3,300 yen)

[Order of the lacquer experience]

① Choose the shape and color of your bowl and chopsticks.

① Choose the shape and color of your bowl or chopsticks

You can choose your favorite combination of unpainted wood and finished colors (red, black, or brown).

*If you bring in plain wood (unpainted) from another company, an additional 2,200 yen (tax included) will be charged.

② Apply lacquer.

A thin layer of lacquer is applied to the entire wood using a craftsman's brush.
* The key to achieving a good finish is to apply the lacquer thinly and evenly .

③ Wipe off excess lacquer with paper.

Excess lacquer is carefully wiped off using special "cake paper."
This results in a finished lacquerware with a natural texture that makes the most of the wood grain.

★Option: Name engraving is also possible!

It is also possible to engrave names on the inside of cups or the bottom of bowls using lacquer.
(Example: initials, date, short message, etc.)

◆How to receive

It will take approximately 3 weeks from completion to delivery .
(This is because it requires a skilled craftsman to finish the piece and sufficient drying time.)

Frequently asked questions about the lacquer wiping experience (FAQ)

Q1. What kind of technique is fukiurushi?
A. Wiped lacquer is a technique that brings out the natural luster of the wood grain by applying lacquer to the wood base and then wiping it off with a cloth or paper before it dries. This is a traditional and basic lacquering method that allows you to enjoy both the warmth of the wood and the luster of the lacquer at the same time.

Q2. Can I try it even if it's my first time?
A. Yes, most of the participants are first-timers. Please rest assured that our staff will carefully explain the procedure.

Q3. How long does it take?
A. The experience lasts about 30 minutes. It may vary depending on the work content and number of people.

Q4. Can I take the finished product home on the same day?
A. No, on the day we will only apply the first coat of lacquer, and then our craftsmen will apply several finishing coats. It will take about three weeks to complete, and once it is finished, we will ship it to you or pick it up in the store.

Q5. What kind of things can be painted?
A. On the day, you can choose your favorite wooden base from spoons, bowls, etc. *If you bring in a plain wood product from another company, an additional 2,200 yen (tax included) will be charged.

Q6. Can I have my name engraved?
A. Yes, we can write your name, date, etc. on the back or bottom with lacquer (free of charge). If you would like this, please let the staff know during the experience.

Q7. Can lacquer cause a rash?
A. Because natural lacquer is used, there is a possibility of irritation depending on your constitution. If you have sensitive skin or are concerned, please consult us in advance or refrain from participating.

A. Yes, we can accommodate groups of 10 or more people (please contact us in advance).
