A nurturing vessel, SUWARI.
We have created a cup with a cute design that takes advantage of Yamanaka Lacquerware's potter's wheel technology!
``Swirling'', from which the name comes from, is a gesture that allows the alcohol poured into the glass to come in contact with the air, bringing out the aroma of the alcohol.
The material is made by hollowing out a thick piece of zelkova wood to create a structure that rises up due to the weight of the wood, and the bottom is slightly rounded, creating a design that sways for a while.
The base is lacquer and is coated with rust lacquer about 5 times and polished repeatedly to create a durable lacquer film.
The black pattern on the sides is a technique called ``Murakumo-nuri,'' which uses the soot from Japanese candles. We created this product with the hope that you will enjoy a relaxing time with this unique soot pattern.
Soot is added to the lacquer before it hardens, creating a pattern reminiscent of black clouds or flickering flames.
Currently, there is only one craftsman working on Murakumo lacquerware in the mountains. In the future, we will also conduct human resource development projects to train young craftsmen who aspire to become lacquer craftsmen.
After many years of using SUWARI, I am dreaming of the day when a newly trained painter will apply a new Murakumo pattern.
Murakumo-nuri was introduced on the NHK BS Premium program “Ippin” at 19:30 on Friday, January 28, 2022.
