Utsuroi represents the passage of time, like the changing of the seasons. The name Utsuroi was chosen with the aim of creating lacquerware that can be adapted to modern life while still making use of traditional techniques.
Ishikawa Prefecture has three major lacquerware production areas: Yamanaka for woodwork, Wajima for lacquerware, and Kanazawa for maki-e. Yamanaka specializes in making woodwork using potter's wheel techniques, and has traditionally made bowls and trays that make use of this technique.
However, sales were not increasing with just the traditional black and vermilion paint, so we began thinking about whether we could create a new product using some new technology, and in the fall of 2017 we began developing products with new designs and striking colors.
The modern, vibrant colors that are in line with recent trends and the beauty of traditional lacquering are expressed in a stylish design made using the ``Yamanaka Woodwork'' technique.
They come in three sizes: S, M, and L, and can be nested like matryoshka dolls, allowing for even more compact storage than stacking. They are also great for carrying around and outdoors.
It looks cool and has a texture that feels somewhat cold to the touch.
