Murakumo is a type of lacquer in which a top coat is applied and when it begins to dry, a Japanese candle flame or soot is applied to create a pattern resembling a rain cloud or marble.

The flickering appearance of a Japanese candle flame is expressed by an uneven coating. The expression of the coating is different each time, and no two patterns are the same.

It can be used not only for drinks, but also for dessert cups, soba choko cups, etc. Yamanaka is a production area for wood. Yamanaka lacquerware is characterised by its high level of lacquering technique. The characteristic of brush painting is that each piece is carefully finished and has a very pleasant texture.

Murakumo-nuri is a "change-painting" technique that uses the soot from Japanese candles.
